Treating Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as Gingivitis and Periodontitis, is a condition in which gums become inflamed and swollen to different degrees due to plaque build up under the gum line. It can also have a damaging effect on the teeth and bones and is caused by a range of lifestyle activities and biological events.

Plaque is a sticky, slimy substance, or biofilm, that is created by the bacteria, mucus and particles in our mouths. When plaque is not removed and hardens over time, it becomes tartar. While plaque can be removed by brushing and flossing, tartar can not.

People who have gum disease will typically begin exhibiting symptoms in their 30s and 40s. It’s not as common for teenagers to develop gum disease. However if they do, it is often the milder form of gum disease called Gingivitis. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults.

In order to manage your gum disease or protect yourself against the progressive infection, there are several things you can do. Flossing and using a WaterPik are the best oral hygiene aides and regular dental hygiene appointments are key. Smoking poses one of the biggest risk factors for gum disease, especially to those who are predisposed genetically or have illnesses such as Diabetes.

There are specialists who deal only in Periodontitis and your dentist can refer you. They can also determine if any bone loss has occurred and prescribe a protocol for treating gum disease. Additional treatment options may be oral antiseptics, antimicrobial mouthwashes, enzymes, probiotics and antibiotics.

Scaling and root planing are procedures which help remove tartar and plaque, allowing the mouth to protect itself naturally without the presence of biofilm producers. While these procedures are helpful, they can not control the speed at which bacterial build up will inadvertently occur.

Another method is to apply a gentle chemical agent which removes plaque and bacteria from the pockets around our teeth. This treatment method also encourages bone growth and disrupts the ability for plaque to grow. The therapy also helps control bacteria and other elements which create biofilm and cause plaque.

Dr. Brown uses this method called Perio Protect in the treatment of gum disease, along with other state of the art methods and technologies. Please call to schedule an appointment or inquire about the specialties of Dr. Brown and her professional staff.
