Crowns are a sort of cap made of porcelain, ceramic, resin or metal and used in dentistry for the restoration of teeth. The different crown materials allow dentists to accomplish a wide range of techniques and results . Crowns are most commonly used in order to maintain or restore teeth’s appearance, shape or size. They are also effective in protecting and supporting teeth, holding dental bridges and covering discoloration or old dental work. They are frequently used when there have been large old fillings that are breaking down or broken and a filling would not be strong enough. They can be also be used to change teeth cosmetically. This can make a dramatic change in one appointment!!

The process of making a crown used to typically consist of multiple steps. First a dentist would identify a problem which could be fixed with this method and establish the condition of the tooth which the crown would be applied to. An x-ray would reveal any issues with the bone or root of the tooth receiving the crown. Next the tooth would be prepared to receive the crown by a process which would be determined by the health of the tooth and the material being used. A temporary crown, crafted from acrylic like material , would hold the place of the permanent crown until it is fabricated.

The crown which was then manufactured in a lab would have the same look and color of original teeth, in order to blend in and give a natural appearance. Once the crown was prepared and ready, the last step would be to make it a constant part of your smile by securing it permanently with a special cement.

Although this method is still widely used, especially for gold crowns, Dr Brown has switched to using new CAD CAM technology for many of her crowns. This allows a crown to be made in a single appointment, no longer requiring messy impressions, a temporary crown being worn for two weeks and best of all, an even more realistic and beautiful crown to be made right while you wait! The new materials are improving all the time and they are stronger and better looking!

There are many conditions and irregularities which can be corrected with crowns. With the advance of technology, crowns have become suitable for more applications. In addition to their various uses, they are also referred to as “instant orthodontics”. Straightening malaligned teeth can often be done with crowns and veneers, again in one appointment now. A dentist will know which approach is best.

Dr. Brown’s team can help you repair or accentuate your smile with the use of crowns and other state of the art dentistry. Set up a consultation in order to determine which course of action is appropriate for you.
